Lowey Dannenberg Selects JND eDiscovery and Relativity to Save $2.5 Million in Class Action Case

SEATTLE--Multi-faceted review strategy and comprehensive data analytics saved Lowey Dannenberg $2.5 million in a class action case, according to details released today by JND eDiscovery, a subsidiary of JND Legal Administration. JND eDiscovery used e-discovery software Relativity by kCura to provide in-depth analysis of nearly two million documents across four offices, streamline workflows and ultimately save the firm millions of dollars over the course of the case.

When Lowey Dannenberg, a 40-lawyer plaintiffs firm, was appointed lead counsel in a complex class action suit, they needed to effectively handle and analyze millions of documents through the discovery process. To help them do so, the company selected JND eDiscovery as their consulting and technical support provider, and Relativity for its complete set of flexible tools to tackle large amounts of data.

"JND’s workflow cut our review time in a large class action case by an estimated 50,000 hours, a substantial resource and cost savings of more than $2.5M compared to linear doc-by-doc review,” said Christian Levis of Lowey Dannenberg. “Being able to lay eyes on key documents upfront was a major asset in developing an informed case strategy and supporting our legal arguments in the case.”

The class action alleged that more than 30 defendants participated in a multi-year conspiracy to fix prices in one of the world’s largest commodities markets. In order to avoid conflicts with an ongoing U.S. Department of Justice criminal investigation, a stay of discovery was ordered – and, as that approached, Lowey Dannenberg quickly needed to analyze the documents that had been produced and looked for solutions to help them do so.

To help Lowey Dannenberg, JND eDiscovery came up with a multi-faceted review strategy that fully leveraged Relativity Analytics. The workflow combined Relativity Assisted Review, structured analytics, metadata analysis, and de-duplication to dramatically reduce the scope of documents requiring manual review. As a result, JND streamlined the review process of the two million documents across the firm’s four separate offices.

“We were excited by the challenge proposed by Lowey Dannenberg’s case: analyze countless documents produced in discovery of this incredibly complex case, and identify those that mattered,” said Scott Lombard, SVP of JND eDiscovery. “By finding those invaluable needles in the digital haystack, we saved the firm countless hours that would otherwise have been spent reviewing documents irrelevant to the case.”

The parties worked together seamlessly, ingesting and processing more than one million files in just 48 hours during the first wave of productions. By suppressing the many duplicates that were included during the overlapping productions to government regulators, 300,000 documents were immediately culled, saving approximately 10,000 review hours. Another 65,000 documents were identified for priority review, saving another estimated 40,000 review hours.
